Kinsmen Park Pool

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

North Cowichan – The City of Duncan and the Municipality of North Cowichan are pleased to announce that the new Centennial Water Spray Park will open for public use on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Centennial Park has recently been upgraded to include tennis courts, trail systems, a playground, picnic areas and a new water spray park. The spray park includes water buckets and cannons, and is activated by a push-button system. Once activated, the water cycle will run for approximately two to four minutes and will be regulated by a computer to allow water flow only during open park hours. This system will also recycle excess water for use in the rain garden, minimizing waste water. It is anticipated that families with toddlers will find the playground particularly enjoyable. The park is also accessible by those with impaired mobility.

Concurrent with the opening of the new Spray Park, the City of Duncan and the Municipality of North Cowichan will be discontinuing operation of the Kinsmen Park wading pools on Alderlea Street in Duncan. The original wading pool was constructed in 1950 and renovated in 1994. The pools have reached the point where significant repairs would need to be undertaken to keep them operational.

“Deciding to close the wading pools at Kinsmen Park was a difficult decision. Ongoing operation costs, maintenance and repairs, and high replacement costs were all major considerations in deciding to close the park,” commented City of Duncan Mayor Phil Kent. “We are confident, however, that the Cowichan Aquatic Centre and Centennial Water Spray Park will provide families with really good alternatives.”

“Both Councils have asked staff to look for ways to increase access to the Cowichan Aquatic Centre during the summer months for those that may face financial barriers,” noted North Cowichan Mayor Tom Walker. “Staff will review and make suggestions to expand our Leisure Access Program (LAP) and other general programs to offer families greater opportunities to access leisure and recreational programs. We believe it is a pretty good solution.”
